JJ Wetherholt and Quinn Mathews highlight the roster
The Cardinals announced its roster for next week’s Spring Breakout game and 16 of St. Louis’ 30 top prospects will get to give a glimpse into what’s hopefully a promising future for the club.
For the unaware, Spring Breakout made its debut last year and it serves as a rising stars type of showcase event. Last spring, 71 of MLB Pipeline’s top 100 prospects took the stage in Arizona and Florida, and this year MLB is running it back the event for a second year.
In total there will be 16 games played between March 13 through 16, and the Cardinals are taking on the Miami Marlins on the 14th at 12:10 ET at Roger Dean Stadium. The Cardinals will be the visiting team for the game. The game will be carried locally on FanDuel Sports Network Midwest and on MLB.TV, the MLB app, and MLB.com for out of market viewers.
JJ Wetherholt and Quinn Mathews headline the Cardinals’ roster as the top two prospects in St. Louis’ system. Also competing are catcher Jimmy Crooks (No. 4) and third basemen Thomas Saggese (No. 5). The entire Spring Breakout roster is listed below, courtesy of the Cardinals Player Development Twitter account.

Of course, not every single one of St. Louis’ top-30 prospects will be participating in Spring Breakout. The most notable prospects missing from the roster are Tink Hence, Cooper Hjerpe, Michael McGreevy, and Tekoah Roby, all of whom are with the big league camp trying to make the Opening Day roster.
