ST. LOUIS – The St. Louis Cardinals have officially added three new directors to their player development staff, the latest step to shape the team’s future around homegrown talent.
Larry Day has been chosen as the Cardinals’ new director of player development, replacing longtime director Gary LaRocque.
The Cardinals have also named Carl Kochen as the director of performance and Matt Pierpoint as the director of pitching.
All three are expected to report to the Cardinals’ new assistant general manager Rob Cerfolio, who spent nearly a decade in player development roles with the Cleveland Guardians prior to the Cardinals hiring him earlier in the offseason.
Day joins the Cardinals after working with Cerfolio in the Guardians organization, most recently as an assistant field coordinator.
Kochan joins the Cardinals after spending the past six seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers, specializing in minor-length strength and conditioning.
Pierpoint joins the Cardinals after four years in the Seattle Mariners organization, one that has developed several young quality arms over the last several years.
The Cardinals will likely look to fill several other player development positions in the upcoming weeks, such as coordinators and data analysts.
The new hires come after the Cardinals announced plans for Chaim Bloom, a longtime Rays and Red Sox executive, to succeed John Mozeliak as the team’s President of Baseball Operations after the 2025 MLB season.
Cardinals executives and organization leaders have previously announced intentions to reduce payroll next season and build a stronger focus on player development around the planned change of guard from Mozeliak to Bloom.
