St. Louis Cardinals infielder Nolan Gorman was sent to Triple-A Memphis, and infielder José Fermin has been recalled.
Cardinals Infielder Sent To Triple-A
Gorman’s Rough Season
After playing in 119 games in 2023, Gorman conceivably had cemented himself as an everyday player in the Cardinals infield. His numbers in 2024, however, have seen a sharp decline. Through 107 games in 2024, he has slashed just .203/.400/.271. Although he has hit 19 HR during that time, his K% stands at a shocking 41.3%. This number places him in the worst percentile in the MLB for strikeout rate.
As a natural third baseman, his fit at second for the Cardinals has not been perfect. In 2024, he recorded a -6 OAA and 10 errors.
His combined offensive and defensive struggles led to his benching in late July in favor of utility player Brendan Donovan.
What Fermin Provides
The Cardinals have struggled mightily on offense this season, especially against left-handed pitching. With the failure of Jordan Walker’s recent stint as a platoon player, the Cardinals desperately need a right-handed bat in their dying pursuit of the Wild Card.
Although his splits reflect a 100-point decrease from right-handed to left-handed pitchers, his presence as a right-handed bat in the lineup might give the Cardinals some offensive flexibility. His ability to play multiple positions also provides a similar flexibility on defense.
Fermin struggled in his 46 ABs with the major-league squad earlier this season, hitting for only a .130 average. The Cardinals need an offensive spark to reignite their Wild-Card hopes. Major contributions from Fermin and other recent call-ups like Luken Baker will need to surface before this reality can take hold.
When Will We See Gorman Again?
Given the organization’s value on Gorman, it is evident that they hope for him to be an everyday part of their lineup. Despite his strikeout rate and struggles with contact, he presents plus power and, at times, flashes of a versatile swing.
It is doubtful that Cardinals fans will see their infielder on the major league field again this season, but barring a major off-season trade, Gorman will likely rejoin the squad in 2025.
