Not only did the Cardinals lose their game to the Twins on Saturday night, they lost their catcher, Willson Contreras to a broken finger. The Twins won the game 6-0 bolstered by two home runs by Trevor Larnach off Cardinals starting pitcher Sonny Gray. Matt Wallner hit Minnesota’s third home run of the game, a 430 foot shot off Cardinals reliever Kyle Leahy.
Contreras was hit in the right hand in the 4th inning by the Twins Pablo Lopez’s pitch. Contreras suffered a broken right middle finger and will be placed on the injured list. With just five weeks remaining in the Cardinals schedule, it appears Contreras’ season is over.
The loss knocks the Cardinals 11 games behind division leading Milwaukee and 6 games behind Atlanta for the last wild card spot in the National League.
