A five run second inning fueled the Cubs t a 6-3 win over the Cardinals on Friday afternoon at Wrigley Field. The Cubs jumped on new Cardinals pitcher Erick Fedde for five runs, three coming on Christian Bethancourt’s home run. Michael Busch also homered in the second inning off Fedde giving the Cubs a 5-0 lead. Fedde ended up pitching five innings, allowing five runs and took the loss in his first game with the Cardinals since being acquired in a trade earlier in the week.
The Cardinals score all three of their runs on bases loaded walks. They had chances in the third and eighth innings with the bases loaded, but couldn’t get the clutch hit.
The Cubs have won the first two games of this four game weekend series between the two rivals. The Cardinals now sit a 56-54 for the season. They trail the Brewers by six and a half games in the NL Central race. St. Louis is two and a half games back in the NL wild card chase.
