A tight pitching matchup went the way of the Pirates on Monday with a 2-1 victory over the Cardinals in Pittsburgh.
Cardinals starting pitcher Andre Pallante and Pirates starter Mitch Keller matched each other pitch for pitch. Pallante tosses six innings allowing one run. Keller did one better going seven innings, allowing one run. The Cardinals lone tally was a Nolan Gorman solo home run in the fifth inning. The Pirates got the go ahead run in the eighth inning on Nick Gonzales’ run scoring single off Cards reliever John King.
The win moves the Pirates to just a game behind the Cardinals in the NL Wild Card race.
