It is a big contact, folks.
Juan Soto was never going to be a member of the St. Louis Cardinals. We all knew that, but we like baseball here so even though he was not joining our favorite baseball team, as baseball fans, it was certainly interesting where he would decide to land. Reports before this weekend had narrowed it down to four teams: the New York Mets, the New York Yankees, the Los Angeles Dodgers, and the Boston Red Sox. According to Jon Heyman, we now have an answer.
Breaking: Juan Soto to the Mets. $765M. 15 years.

That’s a lot of money. It is the largest contract in baseball history. In the title I refer to it has “almost a billion dollars”, which was me exaggerating. The contract is $235 million short of a billion, which is a lot. It is just more fun to say a billion. It does make me wonder about when contracts will reach those levels. It certainly seems to be headed that way. In just 2019 Mike Trout signed for 9 years, $426.5 million. Last offseason Shohei Ohtani signed for 10 years, $700 million. Of course, Trout, Ohtani, and Soto are generational talents, but contracts for top talent are trending up, as prices of things generally tend to do. Seems like only a matter of time before someone hits 9 figures, right?
