Beat Texas A&M.
On February 5, 2022 Texas A&M, the 66th best team in the country per KenPom.com, welcomed in the 134th ranked Missouri Tigers to Reed Arena. Not exactly a marquee matchup. Mizzou was 2-6 in league play in what would become Cuonzo Martin’s last season as head coach. A&M meanwhile had started that season 15-2, and 4-0 in the SEC. But they had lost five straight, things were getting rough in Buzzville.
You’d think this would be a good game for the Aggies to get off their slide and take down a bad Missouri team. But Mizzou won the game, weirdly enough. On the road, in a really bad season. Kaleb Brown played 28 minutes, Trevon Brazile had 8 points. That’s what this game was… a time long past.
It’s time to carve a new future, because thinking about that game kind of sucks.
The good news is those two teams are gone. And in their place for the game today are two top 25 teams. Texas A&M is ranked 10th in the AP Poll, and 15th in KenPom.com. Missouri is 15th in the AP Poll and 22nd in KenPom. It’s also a Rally for Rhyan game.
It should be a fun Saturday, we’ll see if Florida can be the first team to take down Auburn, albeit away from the confines of Exact-tech Arena or whatever they call it now… for me it’s the O-Dome. That’s the marquee game of the day, even if the Gators haven’t exactly been great away from home.
Mizzou-A&M is the second most marquee game. But there are plenty of intriguing games. Like Tennessee traveling to Oklahoma, facing a team desperate for a win and playing at home. South Carolina is at Kentucky and they just want to win a game, but SC has been awful away from home. Texas-Vandy is a tale of two teams just trying to hold on. Mississippi State-Georgia are both trying to battle it out for the upper half of the league. Alabama-Arkansas brings the Hogs back home after winning two straight to resurrect their season. And Ole Miss-LSU is just the Tigers trying to hold on, while the Rebels are hoping everyone else gets taken out of their path to a higher seed.
It’s a big day.
