Live updates from a Saturday clash in Athens.
`First Half
- Believe it or not, Dennis Gates has made a small change to the starting lineup. Peyton Marshall gets the nod along with Anthony Robinson II, Tony Perkins, Tamar Bates and Trent Pierce.
- Never mind, Mark Mitchell is in the starting lineup, not Marshall. The mix-up was on Mizzou, and as a result, Georgia got to shoot a technical free throw before tip-off. The free throw was good, and the Bulldogs lead 1-0 before a second of action has been played.
- Game is tied at seven through four minutes of action. Bates got the scoring going with a corner three-pointer, while Robinson II and Pierce each converted layups.
- Caleb Grill rattles home a three-pointer at the top of the key after his defender, Blue Cain, slipped trying to go around the screen by Josh Gray. 13-11 Tigers with just under seven minutes gone in the first half.
- Tigers lead 17-15 at the under-12 timeout. Caleb Grill has killed Georgia twice with effective off-ball movement, and Robinson II caught the Dawgs sleeping on a BLOB and hit Jacob Crews for an easy layup. UGA, however, had scored on seven of eight possessions. They’ve converted seven of 11 attempts from two-point range.
- BIG MAN JACOB CREWS GOIN’ HARD IN THE PAINT
- Mizzou has been extremely active away from the ball defensively, although Georgia has converted frequently in one-on-one possessions
- Mizzou might’ve taken a page out of Oklahoma’s playbook in regards to inbounds passes. Robinson II picked off a BLOB pass, which turned into a three-pointer by Bates at the other end of the floor. Tigers lead 26-20 at the under-eight timeout.
- Georgia leads 32-29 after going on a 12-3 run. Silas Demary Jr. and Blue Cain have knocked down consecutive three-pointers that were both well-contested. The Tigers have missed four of their last five shots.
- After an and-one layup, Josh Gray causes another lane violation at the free throw line, and he converts the extra opportunity
- HALFTIME: Georgia 41, Mizzou 40. ‘Twas a wild first half in Athens, one that featured 10 ties and 12 lead changes. UGA has completely dominated the interior on offense, shooting 15-for-20 on two-pointers. Asa Newell leads both teams with 11 points, all of which have come from around the basket (his lone made free throw was a product of an and-one dunk). MU is going to have to adjust down low. Mizzou also missed seven of its last eight shots to end the half.
Second Half
- OH HEY TAMAR
- Mizzou has started the second half blazing hot, as the Tigers have made each of their first six field goals to start the period. Robinson II has found a rhythm, Mitchell canned a triple and Bates flushed a two-handed slam that got the MU bench out of their seats. Mizzou is on a 7-0 run.
- Asa Newell is a LOT to handle in the paint. Already up to 17 points after another and-one dunk, but Mizzou still leads 58-54 with 13:35 left.
- Mizzou just converted a pair of epic fastbreak possessions and holds a 62-54 lead with 12:29 left in regulation. Active hands and elite hustle have popped up numerous times today, and the Tigers just created some points because of those traits.
- Robinson II is on a two-way heater. He’s clogged passing lanes all game long, and now, he’s heating up on offense. Pleasant sight to see for a guy who’s endured some struggles in recent weeks.
- Mizzou is on a 19-5 run since Newell’s two-handed slam. The Tigers are now the one converting often in the paint, although several scores have come on the fastbreak.
- Tigers lead 77-59 with 7:16 left in regulation. Georgia briefly stopped the bleeding, but Mizzou has continued attacking the basket relentlessly, and the Tigers have been rewarded. They’ve done their fair share of crowd-silencing this season, and this run has added another instance to the collection.
- The lead is now 82-66 with 3:30 left in regulation. Another two-handed flush by Bates felt like the killshot — the slam not only put the Tigers up 82-64, but Bates was wide open. Although there’s still time left, Georgia looks defeated.
- Tony Perkins just half-postered Asa Newell off of a baseball pass from Grill. 87-70 Mizzou with 66 seconds left.
- FINAL: Mizzou 87, Georgia 74. The Tigers outscore the Bulldogs 49-33 in the second half, and they improve to 19-6 overall and 8-4 in SEC play. Four players scored in double-figures. MU shot almost 60% from the field over the final 20 minutes. Up next: Alabama on Wednesday in what should be a clash of titans.
