The Tigers look to keep the Commodores at bay in hopes of a second straight win.
First Half
- Starters for Mizzou: Anthony Robinson II, Tony Perkins, Tamar Bates, Trent Pierce, Mark Mitchell. Perkins is a go after being listed as a game-time decision. Pierce will make his third start of the season (second straight). Josh Gray will come off the bench once again.
- Mizzou is off to a scorching-hot start, leading 14-5 at the under-16 timeout. Tigers are 4/4 from three-point range; their other shot attempt was an Anthony Robinson II scoop layup that dropped. It’s hard to envision a much better start for MU. The four triples have been made by four different players — Robinson II, Tamar Bates, Trent Pierce and Tony Perkins.
- Mizzou leads 21-14 at the under-12 timeout. Josh Gray has three boards in four minutes. He’s also saved two possessions by throwing the ball off of a Commodore as he’s falling out-of-bounds. Heads-up plays from the horse. Caleb Grill has attempted three shots in four minutes — a missed open three, a missed contested three and a left-handed reverse layup off of a nice pass from Gray.
- Dennis Gates calls timeout as Vanderbilt has cut the Mizzou lead to 29-22. The Commodores are on an 8-0 run, and by Commodores, I mean Jason Edwards. Vandy’s leading scorer on the season is up to 10 points so far.
- Mizzou has extended its lead to 39-22 with 3:28 left in the first half. The Tigers are on a 10-0 run. Trent Pierce looks awfully comfortable on offense. Mitchell and Robinson are both up to 11 points. MU is also 7/11 from beyond the arc.
- Vanderbilt ends the half on a 7-0 run, and Mizzou heads to the locker room up 41-32. The Tigers missed eight of their last nine shots, including five missed three-pointers (a few of which were from way downtown, contested both). Jacob Crews had a couple of bad misses, Grill missed a deep, contested triple and Marques Warrick clanked a three from a few feet beyond the arc. Despite the arguably poor shot selection to end the half, MU did enough to give itself a solid cushion after 20 minutes of action.
Second Half
- Mark Byington calls timeout, as a 6-0 by Mizzou has the Tigers up 47-34 with just over three minutes gone in the second half. Mitchell now has 15 points on an efficient 5/7 shooting from the field.
- Now it’s Dennis Gates calling timeout, as the Commodores have responded with a 6-0 run of their own. Between Vanderbilt and Mizzou, that’s already the sixth 6-0 run or greater today. 49-43 Tigers with 14:39 left in regulation.
- Huge threes by Bates and Grill put Mizzou up 61-52 with just over eight minutes left. The Tigers have converted their last four shots from the field after missing their six previous attempts.
- Mizzou leads 64-60 with 3:46 left. A pair of steals lead to four points at the other end for the Tigers. However, Bates would’ve really liked to have gone 2/2 from the free throw line there instead of 1/2. He’d shot 96% from the charity stripe entering that trip.
- Huge and-one from Mitchell there. 74-66 Mizzou with 80 seconds left.
- FINAL: Mizzou 75, Vanderbilt 66. The Tigers survive a late onslaught from the Commodores, as they move to 2-1 in SEC play. Mitchell finishes with a team-high 19 points. Up next is a trip to Gainesville for a clash with Florida on Tuesday at 8 p.m. CST.
