The Morning Commute for Wednesday, February 12th
Welcome to the Morning Commute
Today we’re talking about coping with a loss in the big game. If it’s not obvious from that, I’m a Chiefs fan and was naturally disappointed in the Super Bowl loss to the Eagles. However, with the game being such a butt-kicking, it didn’t take me long to get over it. Sometimes, it’s just not your team’s day and there wasn’t one or two plays that made the difference. And that was undoubtedly the case on Sunday in New Orleans.
In a weird way (probably speaks to my relative level of emotional immaturity) it’s easier for me to process my team losing a game in which they get curb-stomped, rather than losing a last-second heartbreaker. With that, my personal philosophy is if my team is going to lose in the “big game” I would rather get blown out from the start, rather than lose in agonizingly close fashion.
So that got me to wondering, does that make me crazy? Am I alone in that stance? How do you feel about that scenario? Your favorite team has reached the championship game or series. If they end up losing, what do you find easier to move on from, a blowout loss, or a thriller that gets away in the end?
Let’s see what the polling results tell us about our collective psyches. Be sure to discuss in the comments section.

- Nate Edwards took a comprehensive statistical look back at the Mizzou football team’s offense from the 2024 season. Just how did the profile look?…
Overall the offense ranked 24th, with the 43rd best success rate in the country, 6th-best havoc rate allowed, and a Top 25 turnover margin. The big difference between the ‘24 offense and the ‘23 offense was that ‘24 was one of the worst explosive play units in the country (131st) while the ‘23 offense was, noticeably, one of the best (19th). In basketball terms the ‘23 offense was one who could hit their 3-pointers and the ‘24 offense could not.
It was kind of a tale of two seasons for the Tiger offense in 2024. They seemed to be grinding their gears for the first half of the season, but thankfully did find the stride later in the year, and the offensive output late was a big key in the team reaching 10 wins overall…
- Alright let’s get to looking forward to the 2025 Tigers. Yesterday, Dan Keegan began the process by offering thoughts on the five offensive players he’s most looking forward to seeing on the field in the fall…
But this week is all about the returning stars. These are five Tigers back for one last dance in black and gold, and will be hoisted off the field with a rock in hand, hopefully in triumph, after senior night against Mississippi State.
You can read the article for Dan’s in depth thoughts of his top five, which included Daylan Carnell (safety), Chris McClellan (defensive tackle), Toriano Pride (cornerback), Triston Newson (linebacker) and Connor Tollison (center).
- The Mizzou gymnastics team had a big rivalry meet Sunday against Illinois, and Karen Steger had the recap of the Tigers’ big win in Champaign…
This was a good meet. Vault aside — is this Mizzou’s achilles heel this season? (sorry, LMac & GAD for that choice of words) — the Tigers put together three good rotations. The Tigers’ 197.200 raised their average score from a 196.790 to 196.858, and soon all-important NQS scores will come into play, in which they take the top six scores, toss out the top score, and average the remaining five (which must include three away scores). Floor, while still ranked no. 6 nationally, has increased its average from 49.300 to 49.329. Beam has moved up from no. 14 to no. 13, increasing its average from 49.120 to 49.146. Bars took the biggest jump, moving from no. 8 to no. 6 nationally, and the average bumping up from 49.248 to 49.283.
Mizzou is in position to challenge for a top four position in the SEC, and of course they have big designs on making a deep run in the post-season…
- Lots of national rankings for Tiger teams were the focus of Tuesday’s Morning Commute by Sammy Stava…
After their first two-game losing streak of the season, Mizzou Hoops fell in the AP Top 25 rankings, as expected. The Tigers come in at No. 21 falling six spots in the polls. That’s a little extreme if you ask me for a team that lost to Tennessee and Texas A&M by only a combined seven points, but whatever…
